Digitalisation, automation and information technology are experiencing a stormy growth in business, allowing complicated production processes to take place more and more efficiently. Business communications are also increasingly going digital, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic. These developments do come with vulnerabilities and significant risks. Digital networks are vulnerable to hackers who can disrupt entire systems and production processes via large-scale DDoS attacks, phishing and ransomware. Protection against this is therefore extremely important. Another problem is data theft: hackers steal databases containing sensitive personal information and customer data, and offer them for sale. The goal is identity fraud and scams, often resulting in enormous damage.

To prevent disruption and theft, a rapidly growing sector of cyber security companies has emerged, focused on digital security. More and more companies see the importance of this and are willing to invest heavily in it. They also realise that all the bad publicity associated with data theft can damage their company name.

Why invest in cyber security ETFs?

Cyber security is a dynamic sector with strong growth prospects. Hacking attacks are expected to be increasingly sophisticated, so cyber security will (must) continue to evolve as well. Companies will likely spend more and more on digital security. This creates stable revenues for Cyber Security companies. These revenues might increase as complexity of cyber-attacks increase. It is not only companies that are protecting themselves from cyber-attacks. Individuals and governments also have growing interests in digital security and cyber resilience. Governments also want to protect themselves from terrorism and attacks by hostile nations.

ETFs are well suited to invest in cyber security. The sector is still young and barely crystallised. The market is divided among many different companies, and none of the players, so far, has a dominant position. The cybersecurity market is rapidly changing, making it risky to invest in individual companies. An ETF brings diversification, and investors benefit from the overall growth of this market. In all cyber security ETFs, US technology companies dominate.

Terms and conditions for the £100 transaction fees offer

If you activate your DEGIRO investment account before the 1st of August 2023, DEGIRO will reimburse your transaction fees up to £100. The following conditions apply to this offer:

  • The offer is valid until the 31st of July 2023.
  • During the offer period, new clients who have activated an account will receive up to £100 in transaction fees reimbursed.
  • The first transaction costs and external handling fees up to £100 within the timeframe until the 31st of August 2023 will be reimbursed.
  • Currency handling fees (Auto FX trader) are not eligible to be refunded with this promotion.
